Julius Caesar arrives victorious in Egypt, BCE, and is being wooed for the support of his army by sister and brother, Cleopatra and Ptolemy, rival co-rulers of Egypt. Cleopatra, in disguise as a maid, meets Caesar and pleads for his help in defeating Ptolemy. Murder, attempted suicide, and intrigue take place in contrast to Handel’s most sensuous love, music. High drama and high notes are the beginning of the love story of Caesar and Cleopatra.
